Job Information

Philips Intern Mechatronics in Best, Netherlands

Job title:

Internship Mechatronics

At Philips Image Guided Therapy, we make the difference in minimally invasive treatment to improve patient outcomes and safe lives. With our image-guided therapy systems we aim to remove barriers to safer, more effective, and more reproducible treatments. Philips Azurion is the next generation image-guided therapy platform. Azurion is designed to consistently and efficiently help the user navigate equipment (such as catheters) inside arteries or veins, as well as to help visualize in three dimensions the anatomic regions of interest. Together, we open doors to new procedures and techniques that truly make a difference to people’s lives.

The context of this assignment is within the Mechatronics Department. Being able to correctly position and orient the X-ray beam of the Azurion system in any angulation and rotation combination, with respect to the region of interest in the patient body, is the main responsibility of our department. Look at the link below to get an impression:

Your role:

To correctly position and orient the X-ray beam the system must perform a certain motion. A motion controller ensures that our system performs the motion as requested. The motion must be reliable, smooth, intuitive and prevent damage or dynamical excitation of the system; the system should work within its constraints. Constraints define the limitations of the system, the actuators and the process.

Furthermore, this system needs to work safely in an environment with several humans in proximity, including the patient. For this purpose, collision prevention and detection algorithms are used. Substantial effort is required to instantiate a robust collision detection solution. A large part of this effort is in understanding the system variations.

Develop a method to model the system variations such that these variations can be accounted for in the collision detection design, and to improve the algorithms to account for these variations.

  • Get familiarized with the system and context of the assignment

  • By means of a literature review and small demonstrators, identify the state-of-the art approaches

  • Develop models and infrastructure to perform variation analysis

  • Perform system identification to model the system physical behavior

  • Identify weaknesses in the existing collision detection algorithms and develop an improved algorithm

  • Execute the algorithm as part of the SW of the Azurion system

  • Demonstrate your results to the users

You're the right fit if:

  • You are studying towards your Master in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering or related study;

  • You have strong analytical and problem solving skills;

  • You are able to work within a scope and a given timeframe;

  • You are a team player, contributing to effective team work and offering a point of view.

How we work together

We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 3 days per week.

  • Monthly full-time allowance between €500 - €700 gross, depending on educational level and if you would need to relocate to The Netherlands. If you will perform a part-time internship you will receive the allowance pro-rata.

  • Housing compensation, in case of relocating to the vicinity of the office, €300,- net if location is in the vicinity of Amsterdam, €255,- net for all other Philips locations. You need to provide a rental contract of the land lord, and your normal home-work travel distance need to be more than 50 km or travel time (one way trip) need to be more than 1.5 hours.

  • Travel compensation, if you are not eligible for a free public transport card; you will receive max. €192,- net

  • Paid holidays per internship term.

  • The opportunity to buy Philips equipment at our Philips shop
